Run from what’s comfortable. Forget safety. Live where you fear to live. Destroy your reputation. Be notorious. — Rumi
I think this quote is a great description of a yogi lifestyle, or at least what they aim for. Let me break it down as I see it.
Run from what’s comfortable. And why wouldn’t you want to run from comfort? I’m not talking about your favorite pair of comfy sweats. If you stay in your comfort zone you’ll never experience anything new, and never grow. Imagine if you had never gone to that first yoga class or never gone to college miles from your family. Where would you be now? I know that I would not be anywhere near where I am now, life would be very different.
Forget safety. Now don’t go get crazy here and disregard all personal safety. But go change things up and stand on your hands while you stretch your feet up in the air.
Live where you fear to live. That is something that takes a lot of guts. Think about every new pose you’ve tried, were you scared? I know I was scared I was going to face plant when I first tried crow pose. It was the first arm balance I ever tried. Even after months of working on it, I still feel fear of falling on my face, but I try it anyway. If you get scared, but you can still keep moving forward, you are living where you fear to live and eventually you will be comfortable there. Then you’ll go on to try even harder things.
Destroy your reputation. Be ok with being different, with making changes in your life. Its hard making a huge life change, like becoming vegetarian. I was known for listening to rock n’ roll, wearing leather jackets and boots and crazy make up, vegetarian didn’t fit into that image. But I did it anyway and had a hard time still fitting in with people I spent time with. It was hard, I found myself with more free time than I was used to. I found out who my real friends were really fast.
Be notorious. Be remembered for something big. Maybe for living where you fear to live. Be the person who is not afraid to try something new whether its doing your first handstand, moving to a new state or making a big personal change. Become the person willing to stand up for what you believe in and make try to make a difference in this world.
